What Happens When You Leave? Winter in the Boatyard
By mid-November, Latchi harbour goes quiet. Not sad-quiet. Just… exhale quiet. Like the whole coastline has been holding its breath since April and has finally been allowed to sit down. The tour boats stop running. The restaurants start closing early. The cats, and there are always cats, reclaim the jetty. If you walked through the harbour on a Tuesday morning in February, you’d think the whole place was asleep before they go to the boatyard.
It isn’t. We’re in the boatyard. And this is where the work actually happens.
Every boat in our fleet gets hauled out of the water at the end of the season. Every single one. They go up on cradles in the yard, and for the next few months they stop being holiday props and start being machines that need looking after. It’s not glamorous. Nobody photographs this part. There’s no sunset, no champagne, no turquoise water. There’s painting, fibreglass filler, and a pressure washer that sounds like a jet engine having a breakdown.
But this is the part that makes the other part possible.
Here’s what a winter boatyard looks like for us:
In the Boatyard – the hulls come first
Every hull gets pressure-washed, inspected, and repainted with anti-fouling — the special paint that stops barnacles and algae from setting up camp on the underside. If you’ve ever wondered why our boats feel fast and responsive when you take them out in May, this is the reason. A clean hull means less drag. Less drag means more speed from less fuel. It’s not romantic, but it’s the difference between a boat that feels alive in the water and one that feels like it’s dragging a mattress.
Then the engines.
Every outboard gets a full service. Oil, filters, spark plugs, impellers, anodes, the bits you’ve never heard of that keep the bits you have heard of running properly. We strip things down, check for corrosion, replace anything that looks tired, and put it all back together. Our mechanic, who has been doing this longer than some of our boats have existed, has opinions about each engine the way other people have opinions about football teams. He’ll tell you which ones “bulletproof” and which ones are “a bit dramatic.” He’s never wrong.
The cosmetics matter too in the Boatyard
Gelcoat repairs, new upholstery where it’s needed, fresh non-slip surfaces on the decks. The sun and the salt are relentless out here, a single season can fade cushions, crack fittings, and bleach paintwork. We go through every boat with the same question: would we put our own family on this tomorrow? If the answer’s anything less than yes, it doesn’t go back in the water until it is.
The electronics get checked. The navigation lights get tested. The bilge pumps get run. The safety gear gets inspected and replaced if it’s expired. The fire extinguishers get certified. The first aid kits get restocked. None of this is visible to you when you step aboard in June, and that’s exactly the point.
We also think about next season. Which boats have earned their retirement. Which ones are worth upgrading. What customers asked for that we didn’t have, a bigger bimini, a louder sound system, a USB charging point. Winter is when we listen to all the feedback we collected in summer and quietly act on it.
There’s a satisfaction to it. Not the same satisfaction as watching someone head out of the harbour on a blue-sky morning, but a slower, deeper kind. The satisfaction of knowing that when you step onto one of our boats this season, everything underneath you, every bolt, every seal, every centimetre of hull, has been checked by someone who cares whether it’s right.
Latchi harbour will wake up again in March.
The restaurants will open. The cats will reluctantly share the jetty. The water will turn that colour that no one ever believes is real until they see it.
And our boats will be ready, out of the boatyard and back in the water. Because they’ve been getting ready since November.
That’s the job nobody sees. And it’s the one we’re proudest of.
We are open throughout the year for rya training
