To the Families Who Keep Coming Back
We know who you are!
Not in a creepy way. In the way that a harbour remembers its regulars and families. You pull into the car park and one of the lads says, “Oh, the Macmillan’s are back,” or “That’s the Swedish couple, the ones who always take the 115.” You walk down the jetty like you own the place, because after five or six summers, you sort of do.
We see you every year. And every year, something’s different.
The little girl who used to grip the side of the boat with both hands. She’s 18 now and she’s the one driving. The dad who spent the first trip white knuckling the throttle and asking every ten minutes if we were “still in the safe zone”? He anchored into the bays last July like he’d been doing it his whole life. Didn’t even look back. We were impressed. We didn’t tell him, obviously.
There’s families from Manchester, three generations now, who’ve been coming to Latchi since 2014.
The grandmother sits at the front with a sun hat the size of a satellite dish and doesn’t move for six hours. The grandchildren jump off the back of the boat roughly four hundred times per trip. The parents drink rosé and pretend not to count. Last summer, the eldest grandson asked if we were hiring. He was twelve. We said we’d keep his CV on file.
Then there’s the couple from Munich who proposed at Fontana Amorosa and now bring the baby. The group of lads from Dublin who started as a stag do in 2019 and have turned it into an annual pilgrimage, slightly less chaotic each year, slightly more sunscreen. The retired teachers from London who come, hire the smallest boat we’ve got, packs a thermos and a book, and anchors in the same bay every single time. We asked them once if they ever wanted to try a different spot. They looked at us like we’d suggested they change their name.
This post isn’t really a blog post. It’s a thank you to all the families who keep coming back!
Because here’s what you might not realise: when you come back, you’re not just booking a boat. You’re telling us that last year was worth repeating. That the briefing we gave you was clear, the boat was clean, the water was as good as you remembered. That the feeling you had, whatever it was, the quiet one or the loud one, the family one or the solo one, was real, and you wanted it again.
Families matter to us more than any five-star review.
We’ve been at this since 1989.
That’s not a marketing line, it’s maths. Thirty-seven years of launching boats from this harbour, watching the Akamas coastline in every season, every light, every mood. We’ve seen Latchi grow from a quiet fishing harbour into something busier, shinier, louder. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the look on someone’s face when they come back to the jetty after a day on the water. Sunburnt, wind-messed, slightly dehydrated, completely happy.
You’d think after thirty-seven years we’d stop noticing that. We haven’t.
So, to all the families; the Macmillan’s, the Swedish couple, the Manchester dynasty, the Munich guests with the baby who was a proposal, the Dublin lads, and the retired teacher with her thermos and her one perfect bay:
Your families boat is ready and waiting for you again this year!
And if your kids ever do want a summer job, we weren’t entirely joking about the CV – and you can contact us anytime on that.
