Guadeloupe: From the Blue Lagoon to the Blue Lagoon

From the Blue Lagoon to the Blue Lagoon

Our Family Getaway to Guadeloupe

At George’s Watersports, the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus is more than a workplace—it’s a way of life. But even watersports enthusiasts like us need a change of scenery every now and then – that’s why Guadeloupe. When our family sat down to plan our annual winter holiday, the kids had one heartfelt request: a summer holiday together. They reminded us, sweetly but pointedly

“We don’t get to spend beach time together as often as we’d like because you’re so busy in the summer.”

That struck a chord. Running a watersports company in Cyprus means our summers are all hands on deck, with little time left for sandy toes and carefree days under the sun as a family. So, this year, in addition to our usual winter adventures, we’re embracing the sunshine and heading to the Caribbean—specifically, to the blue lagoons of Guadeloupe.

Exploring the Famous Blue Lagoons of Guadeloupe

For a family that’s happiest by the water, this feels like the perfect opportunity to truly unwind, reconnect, and create new memories under the tropical sun. Here’s a glimpse into what’s in store for us on our adventure.

Les Saintes - Guadeloupe
Les Saintes

It feels only fitting to begin our adventure at Guadeloupe’s Blue Lagoon, a hidden gem tucked away in the archipelago. While our Cyprus lagoon is known for its calm, crystalline waters, Guadeloupe offers a more exotic twist—mangroves, coral reefs, and rich biodiversity.

We plan to paddle through the serene waters on kayaks, spotting tropical fish and vibrant birds, a treat for the kids who are eager to play wildlife detectives. With its unique landscape and tranquil beauty, this lagoon feels like the perfect starting point for our sun-drenched family holiday.

Guadeloupe Beaches

Beaches, Beaches, and More Beaches in guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is a treasure trove of stunning beaches, each with its own personality. From the powder-soft sands of Grande Anse Beach to the dramatic volcanic shores of Plage de Malendure, we’re spoilt for choice. We’ve planned plenty of downtime at Malendure, where we’ll snorkel with sea turtles in the Cousteau Reserve. The kids are beside themselves with excitement about swimming alongside these gentle creatures. Meanwhile, we parents are looking forward to laying back on the sand, sipping fresh coconut water, and soaking up the simplicity.

Basse Terre Guadeloupe

Chasing Waterfalls in Basse-Terre, guadeloupe

In Cyprus, we’re all about the coastline, but Guadeloupe’s lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls bring a new kind of adventure. Carbet Falls, with its dramatic three-tiered cascade, is at the top of our must-visit list. We’ll take a family hike through Parc National de la Guadeloupe, marvelling at the towering trees and vibrant tropical plants along the way. At the base of the waterfalls, we’ll splash around in the natural pools—a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Creole Cuisine Guadeloupe

Sampling Creole Cuisine

One of our favourite parts of any holiday is the food. Guadeloupe’s Creole cuisine has us salivating before we’ve even arrived. A blend of French, African, and Caribbean influences, the dishes here are colourful, flavourful, and full of life. The kids are already dreaming about fresh mangoes and guava juice. At the same time, we can’t wait to try local specialities like Colombo chicken, spicy accras de morue (cod fritters), and decadent desserts like coconut flan. And, of course, no tropical escape would be complete without sampling Guadeloupe’s world-renowned rum (for the adults only!).

Island-Hopping around guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is an archipelago, which means there are multiple islands to explore! We’ll hop between Marie-Galante, known for its sugarcane fields and peaceful vibes; Les Saintes, a postcard-perfect paradise; and La Désirade, a secluded island that feels like a hidden world. Each stop offers something unique—whether it’s local markets, breathtaking hikes, or just the joy of discovering a new shoreline as a family. With ferries and boat charters making it easy to island-hop, this part of our itinerary promises to be pure adventure.

Iguana in Guadeloupe

Volcano Views and Hot Springs

Our family loves a good hike, so tackling Guadeloupe’s active volcano, La Soufrière is a must. Known as the “Old Lady,” this volcanic giant offers stunning views and the chance to soak in natural hot springs along the way. While the older kids are up for the challenge of reaching the summit, the younger ones are just as thrilled about splashing around in the warm, therapeutic waters. It’s a blend of excitement and relaxation that everyone can enjoy.

Sailing Caribbean Waters

We couldn’t possibly leave our love of boating behind in Cyprus! In Guadeloupe, we’ve lined up a day of chartering a sailboat to explore the Caribbean Sea. We’ll cruise around hidden coves, dive into clear waters, and maybe even try some deep-sea fishing—imagine bringing home a freshly caught fish for dinner! The kids are already asking if they can help steer the boat, and we can’t wait to share this experience with them. For a family that lives and breathes the ocean, this is a dream come true.

A Tropical Christmas Celebration

Christmas in Guadeloupe is nothing like a snowy winter wonderland—it’s better! The island comes alive with vibrant celebrations, from lively Chanté Nwel carol events to colourful decorations and markets. We’re planning to join in the festivities, singing along to Creole carols and indulging in local holiday treats. Celebrating Christmas on the beach, with a backdrop of turquoise water and palm trees, will be a memory to treasure forever.

Unwinding Together

While we’ve packed our itinerary with incredible adventures, we’ve also carved out plenty of time for simply being together. Whether it’s a lazy morning by the villa’s pool, a quiet sunset walk on the beach, or an impromptu family volleyball game, this holiday is all about life and family. For us, the true gift of this trip is the chance to experience Guadeloupe’s beauty as a family.

Why Guadeloupe Is the Perfect Addition to Our Holiday Plans

This holiday is more than just a break—it’s a chance to rediscover the joy of summer as a family. While the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus will always be home, this winter, we’re embracing the thrill of exploring a new lagoon on the other side of the world, a new culture, and a new way of enjoying the sea.

From the turquoise waters to the vibrant Creole culture, Guadeloupe promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. And who knows? We might just come back to Cyprus with some fresh inspiration for the next season at George’s Watersports.

Until then, Guadeloupe awaits, and we can’t wait to dive into this incredible journey. We’ll keep you updated by adding to this post the things we see that we think you’ll all enjoy.

Ciao… Alex & Charline x
